The Power of the Thank You Note
You’ve completed the interview and it went really well, so what’s next?
The thank you note.
Thank you notes would seem like the easiest part of the interview process but can also be a challenge to write. When writing your thank you note, it should be short and sweet, but also cover all of the bases.
Believe it or not, many candidates skip writing thank you notes all together.
So why should you take the time to write one?
- Professional courtesy
- Give yourself the upper hand – You can make yourself stand out as a candidate among your competition, especially if the other candidate(s) didn’t write one!
- It allows you to include further detail of something you might have forgotten to bring up during the interview.
So, what should your thank you note consist of?
- The name of the manager you interviewed with – This might sound like a no brainer, but you would be surprised how easy it is to forget the name of your interviewer. For this reason, you should always make note of the names of those interviewing you.
- An expressed level of interest in the position and the reason why you are a fit for the position
- Something from the interview that you talked about – During the hiring process, managers might interview several candidates for one position and it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you include something you talked about from the interview in your note, it serves as a reminder to the manager of your conversation and who you are as a candidate.
- A closing statement – Restate and express why you would make a good fit for both the job and the organization.
